Kiang Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition of large-scale works on paper by Pat Steir, from her new series,
'Sky River Group.' This new body of work, which is being show for the first time, incorporates gestural elements seen
in her most recent monumental paintings.
In 'Sky River Group,' Steir uses an eclectic combination of materials, including wax, smoke and Japanese inks. These
liquid materials are applied to the paper in various ways -----poured, dripped, splashed, swung, etc.--- causing effects
which mimic the horizontal movement of rivers and the corresponding movements of the skies. Steir has refined this process
to such an exquisite state that the liquid appears to retain memory of her intention. They evoke both immediacy and
immortality, playing upon notions of perception in Eastern and Western art.
Pat Steir is among the most renowned American artists of her generation. She has exhibited her work nationally and
internationally and is represented in the most prestigious collections and museums worldwide.
